Day 80: God and His people are unique – Deuteronomy 4 vs 32 – 40.

32-34 Search all of history, from the time God created people on the earth until now, and search from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything as great as this ever been seen or heard before? Has any nation ever heard the voice of God speaking from fire - as you did - and survived? Has any other god dared to take a nation for himself out of another nation by means of trials, miraculous signs, wonders, war, a strong hand, a powerful arm, and terrifying acts? Yet that is what the Lord your God did for you in Egypt, right before your eyes.

35 He showed you these things so you would know that the Lord is God and there is no other. 36 He let you hear his voice from heaven so He could instruct you. He let you see His great fire here on earth so He could speak to you from it. 37 Because He loved your ancestors, He chose to bless their descendants, and He personally brought you out of Egypt with a great display of power. 38 He drove out nations far greater than you, so He could bring you in and give you their land as your special possession, as it is today.

39 So remember this and keep it firmly in mind: The Lord is God both in heaven and on earth, and there is no other. 40 If you obey all the decrees and commands I am giving you today, all will be well with you and your children. I am giving you these instructions so you will enjoy a long life in the land the Lord your God is giving you for all time. Deuteronomy 4:32-40 New Living Translation

People of different nations have always had their own ideas about God. It's popular today also to say that all religions are just different expressions of the same God. But Jews and Christians believe that the God of the Bible is unique. That means that He is ‘one of a kind’ and has no equal. That's what Moses says in vs 32-34. No other god had ever rescued one nation out of another nation with all the miraculous deeds like God had done for Israel. That meant that they also were very unique. No other people had a God like they had. What was the reason God had allowed the Israelites to hear His voice? Vs 35.

Yes, He wanted them to know beyond a shadow of doubt that He alone is God! And vs 36 says that, because He let them hear His voice, He wanted them to always listen to what He would teach them.

Over 1000 years later the apostle Peter told Christians of a day when Jesus had led him, James and John up a mountain and His appearance had shone with glory, and they heard a voice speak from heaven saying: “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” He says: “We heard with our own ears this voice from heaven while we were with Jesus on the holy mountain.” And then he makes an important point and says: “Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place - until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts.” (2 Peter 1:19) Because He is the only true God, He wants us to listen to Him carefully.

Notice in vs 37-39 what this unique God had personally done for the people Moses was talking to.

Even in human love relationships there is a personal action involved. One of the special things in a relationship is that the couple have chosen each other. So it is with being a child of God. There’s no other religion or message in the world as unique as the message of God's love for men and women who were lost in sin and full of shame.

The apostle Paul put it well in 1 Corinthians 8:5. He says: “There may be 'so-called gods' both in heaven and on earth, and some people actually worship many gods and many lords. But for us, there is one God, the Father, by whom all things were created, and for whom we live. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created, and through whom we live.” So if you are a Christian, then you are part of a unique band of people who belong to the only true God and are loved by Him. And, as Moses reminds us in vs 40, God's blessings are with us when we obey all that He has spoken.
